Living Room Rug Size
When choosing a rug for your living room, it’s important to consider both the size of the room and your furniture pieces. As a general rule of thumb, the front legs of sofas, sectionals and substantial chairs should rest on the area rug, while smaller accent chairs will sit entirely on or off the rug. In a larger living room, you can plan for all legs of your furniture to rest on the rug, including all parts of your sofa, occasional tables and accent chairs. Just be sure to leave some exposed floor between the edge of the rug and the room’s walls – this shows that you are layering the floor coverings with intention.

Dining Room Rug Size
When selecting a rug to go underneath your dining set, you want to go not only for looks, but also for function. For safety, your rug should extend 30 to 36 inches beyond the edge of the dining table. This allows for you to pull out your chair and tuck back into place without creating a tripping hazard and without scratching your floors. All four legs of each chair should rest comfortably on the rug when everyone is sitting down to dinner.

Bedroom Rug Size
When it comes to selecting a rug for your bedroom, there is more freedom and flexibility. One option is to include an accent rug or even a short runner alongside the bed for your feet to have a soft landing. Another option is to place a smaller rug, such as a 5′ x 8′ or 6′ x 9′ rug underneath the lower 2/3 of the bed, to add texture and tie together the elements in your bedroom. If you want to place your entire bed and nightstands on the rug, you’ll need a 9’x12′ for a King Bed or an 8’x10′ for a Queen Bed.

Hallway or Runner Rug Size
A hallway is typically where you’ll use a runner rug, but a runner also looks exceptionally striking in the kitchen. The runner should cover about ¾ the length of the walkway, with flooring exposed on either side.

Accent Rug Size
Accent rugs are ideal for foyers or entries. In a small entryway, you want to ensure that your rug is at least as wide as the door. In a larger entryway, make sure that your rug is at least as wide as your console table.
